Production Process
Today I have watched four very interesting videos, which
were about design thinking, the film making processes and how to film a documentary
or video.
The first video was “What is Design Thinking? An Overview”
by AJ & Smart. As the title says it’s about design thinking and the steps
of design thinking. So, what is Design Thinking? To put it simply it’s a set of
tools or steps that will help solve problems but in a creative way.
Those steps include:
- Empathise – understanding the people for whom the project is for. What is their problem?
- Define – what are the users needs? What are the insights you can use?
- Ideate – you develop ideas and solution. Match the solutions with the insights.
- Prototype – turn your ideas into simple, testable prototypes.
- Test – test with real people. The people use the product and then give you feed back. Once you got back the results, go back to the define stage and continue with the other steps.
Design thinking is flexible, and it doesn’t have a recipe
that you need to follow. So, it might even take years before releasing your idea.
The next two videos were technically the same as they both involved the three steps of making film production. The first step is Pre-Production. This involves the coming up with a story and writing the script for it, casting, hiring crew, finding locations to shoot in, making props/costumes, calculating the budget, and forming a production schedule. Each one of the steps is very important to do before commencing with production, well except for making the props because you can reuse some props instead and depending on the type of film your making, the budget for the costumes will vary.
Next up is Production. Production is the most expensive one
as you must pay the crew their salaries during recording of the film.
The last one is Post-Production. This step is the longest
one out of the three because it involves picture editing, visual effects, colour
correction/grading, adding sound effects and music. This process can even take
months or even years to do, depending on the project.
Out of all the videos I have watched, for me the most useful
thing that was discussed in these videos that will help me with the group project
are the three production steps. Thanks to them I understand more what I will
need to do before, during and after the recording of the video for my group
project.
There are some skills that my group would need to consider
during the making of the project. Those skills are research skills,
communication skills, editing skills and recording skills. The research skills
are needed to find the information required for the project. Communication skills
are needed because we need to communicate to figure out who wants to do what and
how to do it. Editing and recording skills will help us during the recording of
the video and after we record everything, we need to edit everything so that it
will turn out nicely.
