Technological Evolution
This week I was watched five very interesting videos about the evolution of technology and what lies ahead in the future. How we went from a typewriter in 1868 to the modern computers, from a telephone in 1876 to the modern mobile phone with a touch screen.
If you have ever heard of Media Literacy, then you should also
know that the modern technology has made it more important than ever. In one of
the videos, they talked about yellow journalism, which means that the journalist
companies focus more on being flashy and gaining more on the profit rather than
focusing on the truth. They sell on a story and not truth or facts by leaning into
drama like making a flashy and dramatic headline which catches the eye.
This raises questions. Should everyone have access to media?
What happens when we rely on media?
I find yellow journalism quite interesting as I knew it existed,
but I didn’t know what it is called. In my opinion it’s alright to have a
dramatic headline since they are trying to gain a profit, as long as they stay
with the facts and don’t lie about the information that they provide to the
general public.
In another video they talked about how in the 20th century they started to worry if people have too much access to the media and that the public and mostly children are in grave danger. People were so scared that it led to protectionism which is too strict and a little weird. There are three types of protectionism:
- Cultural Defensiveness
- Political Defensiveness
- Moral Defensiveness
I honestly think that protectionism is an exaggeration and
that it can be too strict. Personally, I haven’t really experienced something
like moral defensiveness since my parents didn’t care much what I watch but
generally it can be seen in everyday life. I know that some of the people that I
know have experienced at least one of those and I think that they are unnecessary
and going overboard. I understand that they are trying to protect us but don’t
go overboard.
The last two videos talked about how our future will look
like. They predict that in around five years or so 85 million jobs will be
replaced by machines, but 97 new roles will exist. That’s really
interesting to me because around that time I would have graduated college (hopefully)
and went into the world of work.
So, I wonder how the world will look like by then and how people
will adapt to live in this constantly advancing world. I have also realised
that many people will need to upskill and to train their skills in order to get
their job. Many people will possibly return to college in order to learn new
thing. I think that by then many new technological courses will exist.
Overall, I think that the constant evolution of technology
is very fascinating, and I can’t wait to see what awaits us in the future.
